With your CV, you can tailor it to different job applications, but on LinkedIn it’s static. Makes sure it gives potential employers the correct impression of you. And please, please, please, check for spelling mistakes and grammar!
When you set up your account, connect with as many friends on your e-mail account as possible. Then look at their friends to see if there is anyone you both know.
Don’t forget the search facility. It is a very powerful tool for searching connections in your chosen field. Beware: someone with over 500 connections will probably be happy to connect with you, but will them actually remember you? Use connections strategically. Who would you like to connect with? Who can help you get connected to them?
If you go to an event or training session, you will hopefully meet someone new. After the event, try and connect with those new friends. Also, don’t forget to connect with the event organiser or trainer/tutor!
LinkedIn can interact with Outlook. Outlook has picked up on a few people that I have done business with but didn’t realise were on LinkedIn. I soon changed them into connections.
You can have up to 50 skills on LinkedIn and these are searchable. Make sure you have as many as possible.
If you go into “Edit Profile”, you can see who has viewed your profile. You may have turned up in a search or they may know you. Either way, this is a potential opportunity to connect.
If you are going to ask for recommendations, its only good manners to return the favour, so be careful about who you ask. Would you be willing to give them a recommendation back?
Each week, LinkedIn sends out an e-mail showing how people have updated their profile and connections. Make sure you’re on the list.
You can join up to 50 groups. Make sure that you join ones related to your field of expertise, or one that you would like to move into. They are a good chance to raise your profile and people may choose to follow you from here. If someone does chose to follow you, then try and see if they would be willing to connect…
