Once you have made the decision to let something go, then the next big decision is how to get rid of your stuff.
Strictly speaking there are actually only three ways to do this:
- Throw it away. Some items such as old newspapers, magazines and things that are quite clearly rubbish can be binned.
- Give it away. Some things have no value to you, but could have a great deal of value to someone else, so consider who might benefit from the things that you have that are of limited value, for example friends, family, charity shops etc.
- Sell it. Think about all the different types of places that you can sell things. What you have to sell will determine the market you use, for example you could sell designer clothes to a specialist shop that buys them to sell on, or family heirlooms or collectable could be sold via an auction house.
When you start decluttering, think about what you will be removing from your home. Create a system that allows you to group things together based on where they will be going, so for example you could use black bin bags for rubbish, boxes for things that you’ll sell and carrier bags for things to go to other people or the charity shop. Your system could be completely different, just think about what would work for you.
Decluttering is all about removing stuff from your home to create a healthy space where you can relax. You can only do things when the stuff has left the building!
