Decluttering the hallway

Decluttering the hallway

My downstairs hallway is the entrance to my home, and as such, should create a great impression. It should also be an area that’s easy to keep clean and tidy, as it’s not very big, however, the three pieces of furniture there (hall table, shelf unit and seat) have become dumping grounds for things like the mail, coats and shoes. To be able to declutter this area meant that first it needed a tidy up and clean.

My vision

My vision of my hallway is of a clean, clear space with just a hall table and seat. The seat should be clear and polished, whereas the hall table is where we put the mail until it’s filed or shredded. It also has a number of different pieces of artwork (some limited edition etchings) and so has a gallery feel.

My reality

There are actually three pieces of furniture, and at some point the shelf unit will move upstairs, however, there isn’t a home for it there yet. The seat is full of coats and a box of my mum’s stuff that needs to be gone through. The hall table is full of mail that needs filing. As there is a large radiator there, it’s a place where I tend to dry washing!

My action plan

  1. Tidy up and put everything back where it should go for example coats need to be hung up, shoes taken upstairs.
  2. Clean up. We have a fab stone floor that looks great when washed.
  3. Declutter the book shelf. We keep many work related books here, and my cousin will take anything we don’t want, so they just need to be boxed up
  4. Deal with the box of stuff
  5. File any paperwork
  6. Dry the washing overnight and then iron everything in the morning, so that the airers can go away during the day.
