Ah well, back to reality. I had an amazing holiday and have just about caught up with everything, so it’s back to decluttering for me.
This week, I want to declutter my kitchen. This is actually made up of four separate, connected areas (conservatory, dining area, kitchen are and utility), so I’m going to break this down into more manageable areas. Today I focused on the conservatory, or in our house, the dumping ground! It should be a room where I can look out and relax, but as it stands, you can’t even sit down because of what’s been left there. When Mum passed away, my Dad gave me some boxes of stuff to sort through, so it was time to work them.
What I found
Amongst the boxes I found:
- my school reports
- a diary my sister kept in 1978. Apparently, this was the year Mum tried learning to drive!
- every postcard Mum had ever received
- letters from relatives in Blyth, Northumberland, sent with Christmas cards
- 4 old mobile phones
- 2 old cameras
- 12 pads of post-it notes
- a 100-piece Disney jigsaw
- a really old block jigsaw
- and so on.
Sorting through things was like a trip down memory lane. I remembered the names of the teachers signing the school reports. But that was it. Yes, it was fun to read, but did they spark joy? Not really. It was also interesting really old letters, and I’ve made a note of names and addresses to get in touch with some of my Dad’s distant relatives, but that’s all. It was also fun reading my sister’s old diary. She made notes, so it wasn’t a personal journal. I did, however, love the really old jigsaw. I suspect it could be my Mum’s, as it looks like it could be from the 1040’s or 50’s. It’s not worth anything price-wise, but it’s just really cool.
The mobile phones and camera’s will need to be checked. If they work, they can be sold, otherwise, they can go to the recycling centre instead. The post-it notes can be distributed amongst family. There are loads of old pens and other bits of stationery that can be used up, as and when.
I’ve still some other drawers to go through, but I think that’s enough for one day.
Take care for now
