I don’t know about you, but I find it really hard to let go of stuff. I guess that’s why my house has got to the point it is now. Let me give you an example.
My 17 year old dress
Soon after I met my husband, his sister got married. It was going to be a posh affair, so I bought an outfit that was much more than I would normally pay. That was 17 years ago. The outfit was worn once, didn’t fit, but was still in my wardrobe. Seriously. I held onto something that long. We’ve moved house 4 times since that wedding, and that outfit travelled with me each time. Until now.
So how did I let go? Well, in the end it was by recognising that the outfit had served it’s purpose for me: I had worn it to the wedding, but it was not serving any purpose in my wardrobe. It was time to thank it for it’s service and allow someone else to have the pleasure of wearing it.
I’ve taken it to a charity shop where hopefully they’ll be able to use it to raise money for their cause, and someone else can have the pleasure of wearing it.
When you start the decluttering process, remember, it’s not about what you’re getting rid of, it about what you keep. Focus on keeping the things that are either functional or that you love and then it makes the decision to let go much easier.
