I don’t know about you, but when I start a new hobby, I tend to spend loads of money on books, courses and training around that topic. Whether it’s meditation, crystal healing or bio energy, I always seem to make sure that I have lots of resources to support me in my journey.

And while I love having these extras, my pocket doesn’t!

When it comes to journaling, there are some gorgeous (and expensive) journals out there, ranging from a few euros to several hundred. So what do you do if you want to build the journaling habit, but you’re on a tight budget, or have bigger priorities than biying a journal.

Have no fear, it really doesn’t have to cost anything to start journaling. So here’s what to do if you want to start journaling but don’t have much money.

1. Start anyway

You don’t need fancy pens or expensive leather-bound journals to start. You can use a simple notebook or even apps on your phone or pc. Just start writing, typing, speaking or videoing your thoughts. You could even create a secret Facebook group and do Facebook lives with just you as your audience. (Just remember to check where you are before going live).

2. Use what you have

Have a bit of a declutter and see what you have in the way of paper and pens. Journaling is about expressing your inner thoughts, so if you start out using odds and ends of paper that’s ok. You can always compile them later on when you do have some money.

3. Be perfectly imperfect

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there is no right or wrong way of journaling, so don’t let beliefs around having the perfect journal to start off with or needing a fountain pen etc. This is just for you, and whilst you deserve the very best, that means enjoying the experience not the trappings.

Journaling doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby, but it is one that will change your life. Invest what you can to start with, but don’t worry about how much that is. It’s about the journey, not the tools that get you there.
